Official Performance Divisions of Automakers.

We are living in the era of supercars and hypercars. Almost every automaker is jumping into this segment with the challenge to make a new world speed record and producing insane hypercars, which possess loud and bigger engines, sick looking aerodynamics, extremely light weight carbon fiber chassis, active aero and an insanely big price tag which most of us can't afford.
The technology for these hypercars are specially developed, either by a specialized team of engineers, by doing collaboration with F1 teams, or passing on the company's F1 technology itself to the production cars. This also enhances competition among car makers  and also lets them push the boundaries of performance when it comes to regular production cars and a few supercars

This makes a lot of sense as this allows the regular people to enjoy their cars as a daily and comfortable ride but also allows them to put their foot down and let the beast under the hood tell everyone , 'who's the boss...'.These are the cars that you can go grocery shopping with your kids or go to the track and set some good lap-times(Obviously if you know how to drive!). All this is done by adding performance packages and kits that are offered by companies by their respective performance divisions. This kind of modification is legal and developed by the company itself. These machines will be really close to track cars but not completely track weapons. It's a way to provide its customers the performance and the experience of a track focused car as everyone can not afford supercars or hypercars.
But here we are, and NO we won't be talking about regular cars with AMG or M performance kits, but rather supercars with the same. So yeah basically you ain't going grocery shopping!!

Some of the infamous Performance Divisions of Automakers are:

Though there are many we're going to discuss my favorites here :-)

Mercedes-AMG

AMG is the high performance division of the Mercedes-Benz. It was initially an independent engineering firm specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes vehicles, started by two engineers of Mercedes who thought that the performance of cars could be improved. Mercedes took a controlling interest in 1999 and became the owner of AMG in 2005.

AMG's are not the same  cars with different packages or wide body panels, they are completely different automobiles, with the similar looking but more beautiful exterior. The AMG division independently handles the development of the automobiles, everything under the hood is reworked and and designed from scratch like suspension ,engine, interior, brakes, and even the chassis and aerodynamics are worked upon. The AMG still holds its "one man ,one engine" philisophy , each AMG engine is completely handcrafted. I think this explains the insane difference in price tags of both. AMG's are optimised for performance, they are sportier, everything from the steering modes to the steering response to the exhaust note is revamped.
Ever heard an AMG exhaust note?.... That's the sound of performance!!

AMG basically develops racing technology for Mercedes and has also collaborated with Aston Martin and Pagani(They supply engines to Pagani).Well if you still cant afford an AMG, you can buy AMG parts for your Mercedes that make it look like one like floor mats, alloys and other little bits that are there for "show", not performance.

What is a Black series AMG?

I like to answer questions directly, "It's a more BAD-ASS AMG".The philosophy behind every Black series is "To create one of the most puristic examples of Driving Performance ever produced".
The AMG performance studio is responsible for converting an AMG to an AMG Black Series. It includes weight reduction, bucket seats, exterior changes, greater overall performance. These are basically street legal race cars. The SLS AMG Black Series is the 22nd fastest car to lap Nurburgring, defeating 458 Italia,Enzo,Gallaro LP 560-4 and Nissan GTR.

To date there have been only 5 Black Series models: SLK 55, CLK 63, SL 65, C 63, SLS .But wait there is a AMG GT R Black Series which has been spied testing!! so yeah, now there will be 6.

McLaren Special Operations

MSO is the bespoke divison of McLaren that will customize your supercar to your taste and they can help you build limited edition ultra special models. It's a customization division and not exactly a performance division. But they will do that too if you ask..

MSO basically provides owners the opportunity to customize their cars to an insane level like no other automaker does, and I mean it when I say INSANE, from fancy paint jobs to modifying the exterior. So basically a customer approaches MSO and tells them what he wants .
Say he asks " take the roof off my McLaren , add an air scoop on the roof and 2 air diffusers on the front panel and a wing at the rear"

McLaren will do it , They first start by making a sketch and showing it to the customer, then 3d model the prototype , then using clay models to design parts ,to fit the new parts to the old car is the it should fit the standard dimensions for the original car. As they have to change an already optimized car they rework the aero (because you added  new scoops, a wing and a diffuser), the ECU, the traction control, provided it is road legal and allows the use of industry approved materials.
They will do this for a couple of million dollars, yes that is not a misprint. The money includes new R&D, crash test approvals and certifications for roads. Yeah a few sheikhs from the Middle East were able to afford it.

 BMW M

BMW M4 GTS
"M" for motor-sports, was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing programmes. As the time passed BMW started passing this tehnology to its regular cars available for consumers. These M badged cars included tweaked engines, suspension, transmission interior trims, aerodynamics and exterior modifications. It also remains the only company to cater to motorcycles especially the S1000RR.The M is to BMW what AMG is to Mercedes. But doesn't perform that well :P (I am an AMG guy..).Similar to the AMG there are fully M cars and M-badged cars, the M cars are fully tuned and possess the M badge, but the M badged ones aren't fully tuned and have a lot of accessories to make them look better. One of my favorites is the M4-GTS.
