Which auto-maker has lost its way ? I think I need to point out two companies here:
Ferrari and BMW (Please don't bash me guys !!).
Okay, Let's talk about BMW first. In this era of supercars and hypercars why do we not have a BMW hypercar coming out? With the steps BMW is talking it has lost its importance as the "ultimate driving machine". BMW does not give a damn about making the ultimate drivers car, all we have is a refreshed looking, longer sedan with the same interiors from the past 5 years? Its a German automaker for God's sake. I think BMW needs to move from past failures to new ventures. The i8 was a disaster of the industry, everyone expected that to be the silent supercar, "the evolution of electric supercars" but that doesn't perform , a supercar that doesn't perform isn't a supercar! Its a Ferrari(lol, have patience fans ...). Though the i8 looks epic, but.... :P
And I am not here to bash BMW, its a great car company they do not lack technology or the knowledge, they are the ones who gave us the engine in the Legendary McLaren F1, but after the failure of the i8 the company seems to have lost direction, the i8 has had a massive price drop, the cars are still with the dealers no one is buying them and yet they launched the i8 convertible?.Even the M4 GTS,it doesn't deliver on what it claims when it comes to the price. I would rather go with the Porsche 911 GT3RS or Merc- AMG GTR (Have a look at Top Gear's video).
But they have gained direction with the launch of the concept Z4 and concept M8,and they look exquisite, that's the best design I've seen so far. We can expect to see the new design language and new interiors on the upcoming cars. As far as the hypercar is concerned that is rumored to be under development and can be a big news in a few years.
What I feel is that they have lost some precious years on making the i8 work rather than developing their products based on supercar and hypercar market, to cater to the present needs.
Ferrari on the other hand has become a lot boring. What happened to " Every guy's dream car" company, leaving the 812 Superfast out of the discussion because its a great Ferrari, that is how they should be, naturally aspirated big V12, the last naturally aspirated Ferrari they say!.No one makes a performance GT better than a Ferrari, but it seems to have lost track of 'what it is as a company' and being a brand to sell new accessories. Wait, I don't hate it.
Earlier Ferrari used to make great driving machines, with big loud engine and with the performance of great supercar on the road as well as the track.A good example being the F430 Scuderia. The other Ferrari's like the 458, the 488 are still a great drivers car, but what company has lost track of is the performance you get to see in other machines of the same price. Ferrari always puts restriction on their customers as to how they can use the cars, modify it or test it against another car and that is what I don't like about it as a supercar manufacturer , If your car is so well made LET THE NUMBERS TALK!.
Now it has gained some momentum with the launch of the California replacement which is the new Ferrari Portofino, and looking forward to market trends and customer demands it has decided to launch a Ferrari FUV, but that's coming out too late!
With the changes these companies have made are the "Automakers who had lost their way" gained a right direction ? Only time will tell.
