What will happen to the classics if the world goes electric?
Yes, the car world is slowly going electric, big car
companies are slowly dropping their massive naturally aspirated engines, and
trying to incorporate electric drive trains into their production cars. The
governments in various countries are trying to set higher pollution standards
and many countries as well as automotive manufacturers have decided to go “all
electric” by 2020 and some by 2030. And as a car guy I hate electric cars, not
‘cause they are faster than normal cars but because I do love the sound of the growling V8s,10s,12s and
16s, and that will soon be replaced by the whining noise of an electric motor.
Even though electric cars are way better than ICE’s (Internal
Combustion Engines) when it comes to putting more power on the ground,
increasing efficiency, achieving higher torque ratio’s and even beating the oil
gulping beasts in the world’s greatest drag race. But change is necessary there
is a whole new era of cars coming. We can even see the incorporation of electric
drive-trains and battery assists in hypercars like Mercedes Hypercar which was
revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Mercedes’ regular production vehicles and BMW’s etc. In some time, the petrol & diesel cars will be banned and it
will mark the end of a revolution which started in 1800’s, these cars have been
here for about 2 centuries. After all this, one question arises…
What will happen to the classics if the world goes electric?
These cars need to be preserved, there are a lot of people out
there who collect these classics and one solution to the problem was shown by
Jaguar to revive the classic by making them electric! In what is called as the
“E Type 0” they redesigned the old jaguar classic E type which
according to me has one of the most beautiful design. Jaguar designed a new
electric drive train and modernized the whole car not design-wise but by
upgrading the electronics and the power train.
Making it more reliable and fun to drive, that is indeed a really creative solution to the world going “all electric”, because these cars were never reliable and were considered more like pieces of art having a timeless design, kept in the garage and this technique of making them enjoyable, drivable and more reliable can preserve these timeless designs for ages and be an inspiration for the generations to come. Personally I also like the design of the Mercedes SL300, Ford Mustang from the 1950s and a few Ferrari’s.
The only thing I would not like on these cars is the missing
sound of naturally aspirated V series engines and the mechanical gauges, don’t
ask me why, but I am an old school guy who likes little details in design and
the pure sound from the engine. But no one could ever stop a technological
shift (Unless you were Big OIL …. *wink wink*). Hence, yes I will miss these
old school engines and maybe that’s the price you have to pay for a far better
future and an upcoming revolution.
