The Affordable Porsche EV.

At the Frankfurt motor show this year Porsche unveiled its plans for the future along with Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Pack and the 918 resembling mission E,. It is the first all-electric, 4 door sports sedan from the company and will be available by 2019. Moreover, it starts just at $85,000. Which is sick, It’s going to be cheaper than a Tesla! There is no doubt this is going to be a game changer for Porsche in the electric car market and we can say that for sure just by looking at the claims it has made about the car and the features it’ll be providing with the car. Tesla might have to change their product a little bit and react to this launch, because people would love to associate themselves with the Porsche brand name rather than a Tesla, with the $85,000 price tag you get the interiors of a Panamera, driving experience, quality, reliability and performance of a Porsche, with this the Mission E becomes an affordable electric car which is value for money.

Key specs of the Mission E are:

·        Acceleration 0-100 km/h < 3.5 sec
·        Acceleration 0-200 km/h < 12 sec
·        Top speed > 250 km/h
·        Power > 440 kW (> 600 hp)
·        Range > 500 km (300 Miles)
·        System voltage 800 V
·        Charging time 80% in < 15 min

Some innovative features the Porsche Mission E possessess are:

EYE TRACKING and DYNAMIC DISPLAY:

Menu navigation is controlled by eye tracking- the system detects the considered instrument by camera. It takes just a glance at the display to select a different round instrument while confirmation is done by hand. It just takes another glance at the display to select a different round.

The Dynamic display follows the sitting position and posture of the driver. As they move their position to higher or lower, or lean to the side, the 3D representation of the instrument responds by moving with them.

BATTERY:

The battery provides a system voltage of about 800V from the new PSM motor, where PSM stands for ‘permanently excited synchronous machine’- it’s an electric motor with extremely high power density, high efficiency and consistent performance over the entire range of speed. There is one on each axle with a total of more than 600HP with a range of 500Kms. The underbody battery, extends full length between the front and rear axles providing low centre of gravity.

The Mission E possesses wireless charging, just drive over a base plate in your garage and inductive charging begins automatically. But battery can also be charged at a charging station or at home by charging cable via port at the side of the front fender.

Overall the Porsche Mission E looks promising and will bring a tough competition to the market dominators like Tesla. Because being Porsche it will deliver on its claims unlike many other companies in the electric segment (…like BMW.). The following years look promising for car fans as the completion will not be “who has the biggest engine”, but “who can go faster with a more power efficient and long range battery”.
